Hidden storm damage
Why hail damage is so easy to miss
Hail rarely punches holes through a roof. More often it bruises the shingles, knocks loose the protective granules and cracks the mat underneath, and almost none of that is visible from the driveway. A roof can look fine for months while it slowly loses its ability to shed water and shield the house from the sun.
That is exactly what happened on this Springfield home. The homeowners did not know an earlier storm had damaged their roof, and by the time the damage was found, a full replacement was the right call. If hail has moved through your part of Springfield, a professional inspection is the only reliable way to know where your roof stands.
Granule loss
Dark, bare patches on the shingles and granules collecting in the gutters or at the bottom of downspouts.
Bruised shingles
Dents that feel soft to the touch, often with a cracked mat hiding underneath the surface.
Dented metal
Dings in gutters, vents, flashing and downspouts, which usually means the shingles took hits as well.

Why IKO Dynasty was the right shingle for this roof
After hail damage, many homeowners simply want the roof put back the way it was. We recommended an upgrade instead. IKO Dynasty carries a Class 3 impact rating under the UL 2218 standard, which means it held up to a 1.75-inch steel ball dropped onto it in lab testing without cracking. It also has the IKO ArmourZone reinforced nailing strip, which helps keep the shingles locked down in high winds.
Blackstone is a deep, rich black blend that gives this tan brick home a crisp, high-contrast roofline. On a hip roof with this many planes and angles, a dark color makes every line read cleanly from the street.
A roof can look fine from the driveway and still be carrying hail damage, which is why an inspection after every major storm is worth the few minutes it takes.
How we handled this Springfield roof replacement
Before tear-off, the crew covered the landscaping with tarps and staged ladders and protection around the house, as you can see in the photos further down. We then removed the old roof down to the decking, replaced any damaged wood, and rebuilt it as a complete system. That system includes ice and water barrier at the eaves and in the valleys, synthetic underlayment, new drip edge and flashing, proper ventilation, and the IKO Dynasty shingles on top.
We finished by running magnets across the yard and driveway for stray nails, hauling away every piece of the old roof, and walking the completed job with the homeowners.

Protecting the home before tear-off
Every job starts with protecting the property. Our crew tarps the landscaping and sets up safe roof access before a single old shingle comes off.

Hail damage and roof replacement questions from Springfield homeowners
How can I tell if my roof has hail damage?
The most reliable way is a professional inspection, because most hail damage cannot be seen from the ground. Common clues include granules piling up in your gutters, dents in gutters and vents, and dark spots where granules have been knocked loose.
What does a Class 3 impact rating mean?
Shingles are rated under the UL 2218 standard by dropping steel balls of increasing size onto them. A Class 3 shingle like IKO Dynasty withstands a 1.75-inch ball without cracking, while Class 4 is the top rating and uses a 2-inch ball.
Will insurance cover hail damage to my roof?
Many homeowners insurance policies cover hail damage, but every policy is different and most set a time limit for filing after a storm. Getting an inspection soon after hail moves through Springfield protects your options, and we can document what we find for you.
Do you offer free roof inspections in Springfield, IL?
We do, and we will inspect your roof, photograph what we find and give you a written quote with clear options and no pressure or obligation.
